Greenpia Makinohara

Experience tea at a tea garden in Shizuoka, the tea capital of Japan

Makinohara is a theme park built in the middle of a large tea plantation with the theme of tea and health. The tea factory is an important center that produces approximately 20% of Japan’s tea.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences, from picking tea to touring the factory.

Tea picking experience

From late April to early October, visitors can enjoy the tea picking experience for a fee. Visitors can change into a tea-girl costume, pick new tea leaves, and experience the aroma of the tea garden and the tea leaves, a rare experience that is not easily available even in tea-producing areas.

You can take home the tea leaves you pick, and recipes for enjoying kettled tea at home are also provided.

A “tea class” is also offered to learn how to bring out the flavor of tea using advanced tea leaves.

Factory Tour

In the factory building, visitors can observe the tea manufacturing process in a single building, which is rare in Japan. Tours are free of charge.

There is also a historical panel hall that introduces the history of Makinohara and an exhibition room that displays the machines that were actually used in the tea factory.

Tea factory direct sales store

The “Ippinkan” direct sales store sells a variety of products, including specialty deep steamed sencha teas and tea utensils. Visitors can also sample tea brewed by Japanese tea advisors and enjoy matcha gelato.

Makinohara, a tea production area

Makinohara was reclaimed for tea cultivation after the Great Seicho-Hokokan (1868), and the number of tea farmers increased. It accounts for a quarter of Shizuoka Prefecture’s tea area and is renowned as the number one tea production area in Japan.

Greenpia Makinohara is located in the midst of tea fields and offers a wonderful location overlooking the vast tea fields. It is a popular spot for foreign tourists and is often visited by sightseeing buses.
