Located in Numazu Port along Suruga Bay, the deepest bay in Japan, this is the only aquarium in Japan with a deep-sea theme.
The deep sea is the area of the ocean that is more than 200 meters deep. Deep-sea creatures are difficult to capture and transport, and their ecology is still shrouded in mystery.
Suruga Bay is the deepest in Japan, at 2,500 meters at its deepest point.
Because Suruga Bay is steep and the distance to the fishing grounds is close, the staff themselves charter fishing boats to capture various deep-sea creatures, which can be seen in the “Suruga Bay Large Tank.
Particularly impressive are the 150 Hikarikinmedai that light up the darkness, like a deep-sea planetarium. You will be overwhelmed by this fantastic sight.
There is also a “weird creatures” corner consisting of unique creatures from around the world, as well as an environmentally themed tank and coral cultivation, with approximately 200 species and 3,000 fish on display.
In addition, the “Coelacanth Museum” displays frozen individuals and stuffed specimens of coelacanths, the only living fossils in the world.
Coelacanths, also called “living fossils,” have been alive for 350 million years and are so rare that their import, export, and commercial use are prohibited by the Washington Convention.
For this reason, this is the only place in the world where frozen specimens can be seen.
Visitors can also touch the scales of a coelacanth and experience 3D images from a CT scan.
In addition, visitors can see a reproduction of a coelacanth researcher’s laboratory and watch a video of a coelacanth swimming.
There is also a museum store where original character goods featuring coelacanths and deep-sea creatures are sold.
Visitors can also enjoy a mysterious adventure in Suruga Bay using VR technology at the “VR Deep Sea Adventure Deep Cruise,” an interactive attraction facility located right in front of the aquarium.
Why not explore the mysterious world of deep-sea life at this world’s first aquarium dedicated to the deep sea?
