Goryu Waterfall (Five Dragon Waterfalls)

Five waterfalls viewed from a suspension bridge

The beautiful waterfalls, about 100 meters wide and 12 meters high, are located in the Susono Central Park at the confluence of the Kise River, which runs north-south through the city, and the Sano River, which flows from Mt.

Fuji eruption about 10,000 years ago, and was formed on a cliff of the Fuji lava layer. The clear water of the Kisegawa River falls as several streams from the fault in the base lava of Mt.

The three main streams of the Kise River are called Otaki (male falls) and named Yukimare, Fujimi, and Tsukimi, respectively, and the two eastern tributaries are called Choshi and Sagoromo (female falls).

In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the area was known as “Sano Waterfall Garden,” and the Goryukan Sano Hotel, built by Yatsuo Yuyama of Tomioka-mura Oyado, was famous for being visited by many celebrities, including members of the royal family, foreign teachers, and government officials.

All five waterfalls cascade down the same monolithic rock. Around the waterfalls, the landscape shows layers upon layers of lava.

A 63-meter-high suspension bridge and a drum bridge are located downstream, and the view of the falls from the bridge is spectacular.

The poet Wakayama Makisui often visited this area to compose poems, and a monument to his poems has been erected in the park. The area is designated as a natural monument by the prefecture.
