Kitayama Honmonji is a temple of Nichiren Shoshu and one of the seven major head temples of Nichiren Shoshu. It belongs to the Fujimon school and is called “Fuji-Gozan” together with Nishiyama-Honmonji, Oishiji, Shimojo Myorenji, and Koizumi Kuonji in the Sunto area of Shizuoka Prefecture.
It is also counted as one of the “Eight Komon Temples” along with Yohoji Temple in Kyoto, Jiseiji Temple in Izu, and Myohonji Temple in Yasuda.
Its official name is Hokkehonmonji Negen, and its mountain name is Mt. Shigesuhonmonji is also known as Shigesu Honmonji.
Historically, Nikko established Shigesu Danjo on Kitayama in 1293 (the first year of Einin) and began construction of the main hall, Mikado, and Suijaku-do, which was completed in 1298 (the sixth year of Einin).
