Kawazu Nanadaru is a group of seven waterfalls along the Kawazu River flowing down from the Amagi Pass. The seven waterfalls are, in order from upstream, Kama Falls, Ebi Falls, Snake Falls, Hatsukei Falls, Crab Falls, Deai Falls, and Otaki Falls, each of which has its own unique charm.
This group of waterfalls was formed about 25,000 years ago when lava flows from Noborio Minami Volcano, one of the eastern Izu volcano groups, flowed into the valley. Six of the waterfalls in particular have columnar joints formed by the solidification of thick lava.
The area is known as one of the main sightseeing spots in Kawazu Town, and visitors can enjoy hiking along the promenade along the river to visit the waterfalls and feel the power of the waterfalls and the freshness of the spray.
It is also designated as a geo-site of the Izu Peninsula Geopark, making it an interesting place from a geological perspective.
The bronze statue of “The Dancing Girl of Izu,” a masterpiece by Kawabata Yasunari, a great writer, is located at Hatskei Falls, which is also the main site of the Waterfall Festival. Kani Waterfall” is a 15-meter-long white stream with a contrasting green color, and although small (2 meters high and 2 meters wide), it has an air of quietness.
The Hatsukei Waterfall is also known as the main site of the Waterfall Festival, where a bronze statue of the great writer Kawabata Yasunari has been installed. The waterfall is 10 meters high and 7 meters wide, and invites visitors to a special world where the mystery and beauty of the Kawazu Seven Waterfalls waterfall tour is combined.
Snake Falls is 3 meters high and 2 meters wide, named for the basalt pattern resembling the scales of a snake.
The “Shrimp Waterfall” is 5 meters high and 3 meters wide, and its shape resembles the tail fin of a shrimp, giving it a beautiful appearance. The beauty of nature’s formations that visitors encounter while touring the waterfalls fascinate them and leave a deep impression on their hearts.
