Mt.Omuro

A volcano with a bowl-shaped silhouette

Omuroyama, 580 meters above sea level, has a distinctive bowl-shaped silhouette that is easily recognized by its beautiful green mountain surface, and is a familiar symbol of Izu Kogen.

The entire mountain is covered with lush grass, and at the top is a crater 300 meters in diameter and 70 meters deep.

The summit can be easily reached from the foot of the mountain by a sightseeing mountain lift, and is known as one of the best viewing spots in Izu.

The summit offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view, and depending on the weather, you can see as far as Mt.

On a clear day, it is a great spot to take a commemorative photo with Mt.

Since it is a small mountain, if the weather permits, a walk around the volcano’s crater and a 1,000-meter tour of the bowl that circles the crater ruins is also recommended.

The color of the mountain surface changes with the seasons: yellow-green of young leaves in spring, deep green in summer, silver of silver grass in autumn, and from golden to black in winter.

The crater also has the Omuroyama Sengen Shrine, dedicated to the god of easy childbirth and marriage, on the east side of the crater, the Gochi-norai Jizoson, five Buddhist statues built in the Edo period, on the west side, the Yatugatake Jizoson, eight Jizos on the south side, and facilities for enjoying archery.

Mountain Lift

It is believed that Mt. Omuro itself has been a sacred mountain since ancient times. An Otorii gate stands at the foot of the mountain, and visitors pass through the gate to reach the lift.

The lift takes you on an exhilarating 6-minute aerial walk, swaying in the wind over the carpet-like grassy mountain surface.

Plateau at the foot of the mountain

At the foot of the mountain are attractive tourist facilities such as “Izu Shaboten Park” and “Cherry Blossom Village,” which has been recognized as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots, to delight visitors.

Yamayaki (mountain burning)

Once a year, on the second Sunday of February, the “Yamayaki”, a traditional event that has continued for more than 700 years, is held and visitors can enjoy the spectacular sight of the entire mountain ablaze.

This event was started for the purpose of preserving the mountain and growing high-quality kaya (thatch). After the burning of the mountain, it is a spectacular sight to see the flames rush up from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain.

Origin

Mt. Omuro was formed by an eruption about 4,000 years ago, and the scoria that accumulated around the crater, called scoria hill, formed a conical hill.

The mountain has a scoria-shaped crater 250 meters in diameter and 40 meters deep. There is also a crater rim on the south side of the summit, where a triangular point has been established as the highest point.

In the area surrounding Mt. Omuro, the eruption caused lava to flow out and form a lake in the Ike district. Later, large amounts of lava overflowed from the northeastern and southern foot of the volcano, and the lava that flowed to the southeast reclaimed the Sagaminada Sea, forming the Jōgasaki Coast.

This lava flow created gently sloping land, leading to the development of Izu Kogen as a tourist and vacation resort area. The lava that flowed to the north also formed lakes, some of which flowed into Lake Ippeki, creating a group of small islands called the Twelve Renshima Islands.

Today, Mt. Omuro has finished erupting, and the possibility of another eruption has been ruled out. Therefore, visitors can visit the summit with peace of mind.

Omuro is designated as a national natural monument and a UNESCO World Geopark as a representative example of a scoria hill in Japan because of its well-defined and well-preserved shape. Its value is recognized both domestically and internationally.

The mountain has spectacular scenery and historical value created by the forces of nature, and provides excitement and enjoyment to visitors. We invite you to take the lift from the foot of Mt. Omuro and enjoy the spectacular 360-degree panoramic view at the top of the mountain!
