Shizuoka » Atami » Izu (Izu Peninsula)
The museum is spread out over 70,000 square meters of hilly land in the mountains behind Atami Station.
In order not to spoil the surrounding landscape, the connection from the entrance to the main building is via an underground escalator through a tunnel of light and sound.
From the main lobby, visitors can enjoy a magnificent 180-degree panoramic view stretching from Hatsushima and Izu Oshima and the Boso Peninsula to the Miura and Izu Peninsulas.
Exhibits include the National Treasure “Red and White Plum Blossoms” by Korin Ogata, “Tea Jar with Iroe Wisteria Flowers” by Ninsei Nonomura, and the handscroll “Hanbokujo.
The museum’s collection of more than 3,000 masterpieces, including three national treasures, 67 important cultural properties, and 46 important art objects, covers a wide range of fields including paintings, calligraphy, crafts, and sculpture, with a focus on Japanese and Chinese oriental art.
The main building is a three-story structure with a total of 10 exhibition rooms on the first and second floors, as well as a Noh theater, the “Golden Tea House” (restored) associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and a restaurant.
The exterior walls are made of Indian sandstone with a cracked surface finish. The main lobby is an atrium between the first and second floors, with a front glass wall 32 meters wide and 8 meters high.
The escalator from the entrance to the museum’s main building has a height difference of approximately 60 meters, with seven escalators spanning a total length of 200 meters.
The walls and ceilings of the escalators are illuminated with ever-changing lighting, allowing visitors to enjoy a gradation of colors.
In the middle of the escalators is a “circular hall” with a diameter of approximately 20 meters, which is used for events.
